Farm country is closer to Los Angeles than you might think. When I visit Moorpark, California, it reminds me of being on my grandparents’ farm in the midwest. City kids can enjoy a funfilled day with farm animals and farm activities at Underwood Family Farms.
Underwood Family Farms has a variety of farm animals like goats, chickens, horses and cows. They are also play areas for the kids and a farm stand selling fresh produce.
One highlight of visiting Underwood Family Farms is the tractor pulled wagon ride around the farm that is included with admission. It makes a stop at the u-pick farm fields, and depending on when you visit, you can pick your own fresh fruits and vegetables. What’s available depends on what’s in season. You can enjoy a full POV video of the tractor pulled wagon ride below.
Depending on when you visit, you might also get to experience a special festival. Underwood Family Farms has a Springtime festival in the weeks leading up to Easter, and they have a Fall Harvest Festival in the weeks leading up to Halloween. They also sell Christmas trees in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
While Underwood Family Farms is open all year round, we usually try to visit during a festival so that we can enjoy the extra activities, entertainment and food options. While it’s more crowded during festivals, especially on the weekends, that’s also when there’s the most to see and do! You can see a glimpse of what it’s like to visit Underwood Family Farms during the Springtime Easter Festival in the video below.
There is a large parking lot right next to the farm entrance, and parking is free. A lot of the activities like the playground and the tractor pulled wagon ride are included with admission, but there are also some activities that cost extra, like food for the animals or rides and activities that are available during festivals.
Some of my kids’ favorite activities that are included with admission include the slides, the tractor-pulled wagon ride around the farm, which stops at the pick your own fields if you would like to pick what’s in season. My kids also like seeing the farm animals, the trike trail, wooden play structures, giant hay stacks and Farmer Craig’s chicken show.
There are several more activities available for a small fee. You’ll need to buy tickets at the ticket booth to redeem for activities like duck feeding, goat petting, the John Deere train ride, and the mini electric tractors. In addition, there are some activities only available during the festivals that cost extra. For example, during the Easter festival, some of the extra activities include an egg hunt, design your own Easter basket, and games like egg toss, ring a carrot and duck races.
Easter activities that are included with admission include an Easter bunny photo op and pictures with Easter props like a giant Easter basket and oversized Easter eggs and carrots. Be sure to bring your own camera.
Food and beverages are available on site, and during festivals there is also a big tent set up where you can shop for farm and seasonal souvenirs.
Parking is free in a huge dirt parking lot right next to the farm entrance. The only restrooms available are port-a-poties, but there are sinks with soap available outside. I recommend bringing sunscreen, hand sanitizer, water bottles and a fully charged cell phone. It’s sure to be a great day!
