A little girl and a sled in the snow in Wrightwood, California

When it rains in the Los Angeles area in the winter, that usually means it’s snowing in the mountains. At least once a year, our family makes the drive up a nearby mountain to play in the snow. Our current favorite day trip to play in the snow is Wrightwood, California.

Bags packed in the back of our car for a snow day in Wrightwood, California

A few weeks ago, we loaded up the back of our car with our warm coats, winter boots and sled. Then we drove to Wrightwood. We stopped in town at Mountain Hardware to get a free map of the best places to play in the snow. Then we drove past Yeti’s Snow Play and took a left up the mountain at the fork in the road.

We were advised that one of the good snow play spots was a location called Grassy Hollow. We drove there first, but it looked really crowded, and there wasn’t anywhere to park. We ended up turning around thinking we’d head back a little ways.

We didn’t go very far before I noticed a lookout spot with a great view. We stopped so I could take a picture and noticed there was a lot of snow right there and nobody was playing in it yet. I suggested we just put on our snow gear and play right there, so we did.

Family fun in Wrightwood, California in the winter

The best part about visiting Wrightwood in the winter at that it’s an easy drive. We’ve literally never needed chains on our tires when driving up the mountain, unlike other nearby snowy towns like Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. If you’re not used to driving in the snow, this is a great, safe place to visit, and it’s packed with winter fun!

While we were in Wrightwood, we had fun sledding, making snow angels and building a snowman, and it was all free! Watch the video below to learn more about winter fun in Wrightwood and to see some of our favorite things to do in the snow.
